Credit is a part of your everyday life, but you don’t often have to face it directly.

There’s nothing to fear. With a bit of information behind you, you’ll be able to take charge and make the most of your credit score.

What Is It?

Your credit report and score are not the same things.

Your credit report is what your score is based on. Think of it like a grade, quite literally, for your report. It’s important to keep the definitions of both separate, they are not interchangeable.

When you check your credit score free online you’ll be provided with this grade and it could be one of many. FICO and VantageScore are two of the most common credit scores that are used.

Both of these scores rate your credit score range from 300-850 and the higher the score the better.

This score is formed from a compilation of previous credit that you’ve opened. If you were late on payments or defaulted this will negatively affect your credit score. The information to create this grade provided by the three major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

These are not the only credit scores available, but they are the ones that you will most easily have access too.

Lenders can use different credit scores depending on the information they need to best judge any risk you pose. These different credit scores may be used if you have a limited credit history or the lender feels they need additional information before making a decision.

These credit scores can be based on rental or utility history, tax records, public records and more.

What Does Your Score Do?

Businesses evaluate your score as a measurement of your responsibility. By acting as a record of your behavior your credit score can assure others that you aren’t a risk.

When you have high credit score the benefits are everywhere.

It sounds a bit like a scam, but that’s far from the case, usually. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re using the right resources.

Your first stop should be your credit card provider.

In a recent change, banks are willing to provide you with your credit score. You may have seen recent television ads or notifications when you log into your account online. If you haven’t, give your bank a call.

There’s a good chance they’ll be able to provide you with your credit score. Some banks have timed promotions that allow you to receive your credit score at a certain time of year.

You may even see your FICO credit score on your monthly credit card statement.

If your bank is unable to help, there are still options.

Some of the best free credit score websites such as Credit Sesame, Credit Karma, and Credit.com offer access to check your credit score free online. They will not ask for your credit card information.

These businesses earn their money from providing additional services. They connect you with credit card and loan companies that fit your profile and receive a referral fee.

Be aware, in order to use these services you will have to provide your social security number.

There is no reason to pay for your credit score. If a company starts asking for your payment details it’s time to step back.

What most people don’t know, is that you’re able to receive a free credit report once a year from each of the major credit agencies. This will give you a chance to not only get the in-depth reasoning behind your score, but you can check for any mistakes.

Take the time to go through this information. Not only can it help improve your credit if there was an error, but you can catch potential fraud and save yourself stress down the line.

Never Be Afraid to Change

So you decided to check your credit score free online, but you’re not completely satisfied with the result. Don’t worry, you can still change it.

Most critically you’ll want to make sure that you pay off or consolidate any existing debt. The sooner you’re on a routine payment schedule, the better. It’s also a time to avoid the temptation of opening up new lines of credit, especially with flashy offers, in an effort to offset your debt.

A low credit score can even happen from oversight, which is why it’s so important to check your credit report for any mistakes. Don’t panic if you see a low score. Take stock of all the facts before proceeding.

Adjusting a credit score is never an easy task, but by buckling down and changing a few habits you’ll be on your way to the 700s in no time.

And don’t worry. Just like how you were able to get a free credit score check, you’re also able to get free assistance fixing it.

  1. I want to fix my credit but I am always fearful of the word free.

The word free turns into a $1 then you’re tied into a monthly payment. Have you ever seen deals like that?

With all of those credit apps, like Credit Karma or Credit Sesame, which are good. However, they charge more for the information you really want to know about.

My bank was no help either. There was a fee just to check my report in general.

I really was not aware how important my credit score was. Now I understand why things have been going the way they have.

From reading your article, I’d rather have my score and get assistance here.

Dealing with my credit is one of my biggest fears. I know what it consists of but things happen in life.

That’s why I am focused on applying better financial decisions in my life.

This article made me open my eyes to the things that affect my credit report.

    • Hi Cooki,

      I completely understand.

Those free services will try to upgrade you, so only sign up for the free services.  Even if it’s only for your Vantage Score.

If you have a credit card or can qualify for one, check to see if they offer your FICO score for free.  I have a card that offers it and it really comes in handy when shopping for a car or home.

Your bank did you wrong by charging you to see your credit report.

You can get your credit report free annually.  If you stagger your credit report request every four months that should be enough for you to take action to any derogatory items on your report for the full year.

If all else fails please send me an email message to Patrick@creditsquared.com and I will get your questions answers.

      Thanks for your awesome comment!

      All the best.
