The reason why MyFICO is one of the highest rated credit monitoring services is that they use the same algorithms that the credit bureaus use to score your credit.

In fact, you can go to their website any time to see instant reporting or monitor any changes. You can even track your credit history.

As for identity theft protection, they will help you restore your credit if any of your personal information is stolen. The cost for this level is $19.95 a month.

With the FICO Ultimate 3B level, you get everything in the 1B level but you only get updates every quarter instead of every month. However, what you do get is high-level identity theft monitoring. This plan is $29.95 a month.

  1. Hey Patrick,

    Ahh…Credit repair.

So far my experiences with credit repair have not been encouraging.

However, this is a good post. I’m somewhat jaded by the whole credit repair industry because I’m presently involved with some “credit repair” that s not quite going the way I planned.

If you don’t have a large number of items you need “repaired” then you can see results in 3-6 months.

But if you’re like me and have a more nefarious history…

    Look out!

    Good post.

    Talk Soon,

    • Howard – Sounds like you are in a tough spot.  It’s true you need to look out. However there are reputable credit repair companies out there, you just need to do your home work to find the right one.  Of course it’s always buyer beware.

Having said that it’s important to keep an eye on your credit.  There are many highly rated credit monitoring services available today to accomplish that.

Even if you have credit problems and are working through them, it’s well worth using one of these services to monitor your progress.

      Best of luck.

  2. I’ve used LifeLock but I find it to be very expensive.

Presently, I use Credit Karma as there is no charge to use. A problems I’ve found with using Credit Karma is that they don’t exactly use the same credit models that the actual credit bureaus use.

So, the credit scores appear higher than the actual scores from the bureaus. Although, I agree, if money is no object I would trust LifeLock.

    • Hi Reinaldo,

Yep LifeLock is expensive, but if it helps you sleep better at night it could be worth it.

Since the Equifax breach, I’ve been recommending to my readers to place a freeze on their credit accounts.  If you don’t use a lot of credit this could be a low cost strategy for you. The only down side is that it costs $10 to freeze and unfreeze your account, so if you plan on financing something major in the near future it’s probably not a good idea.

Credit Karma uses the Vantage Score model which is different than FICO.  Many banks and financial service companies use FICO, so if you are at a score threshold the Vantage scoring system may not be helpful.

However, the nice thing about Credit Karma is it stratifies your credit score into several factors and rates each one.  It helps you see exactly how they interpreted your credit to reach a score.

      All the best.
